The next season of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” has broken a record before it even begins.

The scripted New York City sex crimes series will become the longest-running TV drama ever later this year when it kicks off its 21 Season.

NBC made the renewal announcement Friday, which will push the title past the 20-season runs of sister series “Law & Order,” which aired from 1990 to 2010 and “Gunsmoke,” which ran from 1955 to 1975.

“SVU,” which debuted in September of 1999, centers on the lead detectives in the NYPD’s Special Victims Unit who handle crimes involving sexual assault or victims who are children, elderly or disabled who require extra care. Mariska Hargitay stars as Lt. Olivia Benson in the series created by Dick Wolf.

"We tip our cap to Dick Wolf, Mariska Hargitay and the amazing cast and crew of ‘SVU,’ who now all go into the record book,” NBC Entertainment co-chairmen Paul Telegdy and George Cheeks said in a statement. “This incredible run is an example of what happens when producers, writers and actors all come together and create a show that, year after year, speaks to its audience in a powerful way. We couldn’t be more proud of this remarkable achievement.”

Hargitay noted the show still has more to accomplish, tweeting “20 years ago, we started a conversation. We’re not finished. I’m profoundly proud of how far we’ve come. Prouder still of how far we’ll go. We’ve all broken this ground together.”

Actor and rapper Ice T, who plays Sgt. Odafin “Fin” Tutuola on “SVU,” also weighed in on the show’s latest achievement. He posted a message of “respect” on Twitter to NBC, Wolf, Hargitay and fellow stars Kelli Giddish, Peter Scanavino and Philip Winchester “and all my past and present cast and crew...and definitely all the fans!"

Hargitay has earned eight Emmy Award nominations for Lead Actress in a Drama Series, winning in 2006. She founded the Joyful Heart Foundation in 2004, a nonprofit that aims to change society’s response to sexual violence and provide support to victims.

“As ‘SVU’ moves into its third decade, Mariska has become an iconic figure as a star, advocate and crusader for women,” Wolf said. “She is an enduring champion of the movement to end sexual violence, and dozens of episodes have dealt with the very same issues that have shifted into the spotlight in this country in the past two years.”
